With the long explanation we have just gone over, you may wonder why
some still believe that Dudleytown is haunted. Is it? Those of you who believe
in the paranormal, but still have a rational mind (in other words, those who
still believe in FACTs) will say--"if it wasn't before, it probably is NOW!" ,
and I would be tempted to agree with you. SO MUCH has been made of the place--
New Agers have channeled spirits there, mediums have done seances there,
Satanists have done their rituals there, and add all that up, and the cliche'
"if you play with fire, you are going to get burned" comes to mind.
What I want to know is: if I--in Texas--could find all this out, why hasn't
anyone else? Why do people INSIST in placing a curse where there obviously
was none? When I was in psychology class in college, we did an experiment. I
had seen it done before--at parties. You take a group of people and sit them in
a circle. You whisper one easy "phrase" into the ear of the person on your
right--they, in turn, must pass it to the next person, and so forth. The last
person must stand up and say the phrase out loud. Did it ever come out
right? NO!
And that is what happened to Dudleytown. Pure and simple.
You see, the main problem with Dudleytown is that: 1) on the one hand, it
sounds so good!, but 2) there is just too many facts. To arrive
at your illogical destination, you must ignore them. And that is what
people have done--ignore the facts.
Add to that the "LEGITIMATE"
Psychic "investigators" that not only ignored the facts--but made up things
as they went along! Look, for instance, at Ed and Lorraine Warren. They
were so wrong that the dates were 100 years off! And they say they are the
BEST! They never bothered to check their facts out. You would imagine that the
BEST would have at least gone to the Cornwall Historical Society---easy enough
to find, I did it in TEXAS. Why didn't they? And then the internet Ghost
Hunters, who actually make "excursions" or "investigations" to Dudleytown and
come back with obvious glare in their pictures, and call them "ghost lights"
and "energy globules". I have photos on my site too...some from the same
"excursions"---no lights. Why?
If Paraphyscology and the
Paranormal are to be taken as actual sciences--then it must start acting like
they are legitimate. Science works UPON facts---true science does not
ignore them. Scientists would have done their research before going up
there--they would have made every attempt at determining what--if
anything--they might find. The "Paranormal Investigators" actually went
expecting to find ghosts (check their Web sites, they actually say it!),
and sure enough they did. Many, upon seeing the first page I did on Dudleytown,
tried to call me down on the facts. They could NOT--and some (honestly enough!)
admitted it. Even when confronted by the genealogical evidence siting NO
connection to the Earl of Leicester some said "Well, the curse was on the
Dudley's--I don't know who, but it was. YOU must be wrong." Reason is sent
reeling. I know some true Paranormal Investigators. They have told me that out
of 100 cases sent to them, they may check out one. THAT seems
reasonable. They have looked at my evidence, and say that they wouldn't even
bother with it, and can't understand the fuss. They have said that IF
Dudleytown is haunted now, it is because of what people have brought in...not
by what was originally there. I agree.
IF these two sciences are
based up Spirituality--then they must also follow the rules of the Spirit. Most
religions of the world agree that once dead--then comes the judgment. (with the
exception of the religions that adhere to reincarnation). Now, the bible will
cite one or two instances that people have returned from the dead. However,
they are rare. IF the above named "sciences" are going use religious terms,
examples, and cover their experiences in spiritual terms, then they should
follow the rules. Some Spirits seem not to cross over when they should. OK,
lets agree on that....however, ghosts are the EXCEPTION, NOT THE RULE.
They should be very, very rare. Yet in Paranormal circles--anyone who thinks
they have a ghost has one. They seem to go looking for one--and sure
enough they always find one.
The "curse of Dudleytown" has gotten so
far out of hand that now we have a Bigfoot, UFO's, Indian Burial Ground curses
(yes, there was a Mohawk tribe in the area at one time--about 10 miles away),
vortex's, etc. etc. etc.
In the midst of all of the above, it had
approved hiking trails, before it was closed.
I went into this
research really hoping that there was something to it. After all, for a
genealogist and minister to have a "real" haunted town in their family would
have been absolutely wonderful! I, too, have seen things as a minister that
would curl most people's hair. Unfortunately, my roll as a History Teacher
(which I am also serious about), and my hobby as a family genealogist, lead me
down a factual path.
Sorry folks--that's the bottom line. If you need
a family curse, try the White House--you will NOT find one at
Dudleytown.
And the next time you are in Connecticut, go ahead--pack a
lunch and hike up one of the approved hiking trails in Dudleytown. Just
leave by dark---there is no telling what group will be up there then, trying to
prove what is not.
